Level 1: Introduction to Occupational Therapy driving intervention
The logistics of the course
Format
- The course consists of 8 content-specific lessons that are presented as pre-recorded online videos.
- Attendees have access to downloadable course notes and resources pertaining to each lesson.
- Attendees can purchase the course in its entirety or purchase individual lessons.
Duration
- The entire course is 10 hours 45 minutes in duration. From date of purchase you have 1 year to complete the course.
- The duration of each of the 8 lessons is between 1-2 hours. From date of purchase you have 3 months to complete the lesson.
Assessment
- Attendees are required to complete a multiple-choice quiz on the content of each lesson.
- Attendees will receive a CPD certificate on successful completion of each course, with a pass score of 70%.
CPD
- A total of 7 general and 2 ethics CEUs are allocated to the full course.
- 2 ethics CEUs are allocated to the Legislation, ethics and liability in driving lesson.
- 1 general CEU is allocated to all other individual lessons.
Course fee
- Courses are individually priced.
- DFC members receive a 10% discount.
Payment
- Payfast payments are preferred and enable immediate access to the course.
- Please use EFT for third-party and group payments only. Allow 7 business days for these payments to be processed before accessing the course.
- For group payments each attendee must register and obtain an individual invoice for submission to their accounts department.
Who should attend the course
This level 1 course is designed for Occupational Therapists and stakeholders who are interested in the field of driving and community mobility intervention. The course aims to equip the attendee with the necessary knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and referrals related to fitness to drive.
What is covered of the course
The course aims to provide attendees with an introduction in the theory, administrative requirements, screening processes and interventions related to driving and community mobility.
Attendees will learn about:
- The occupation and task analysis of driving.
- The role of the Occupational Therapist and the South African guidelines on functional driving evaluation.
- Introduction to medical fitness to drive.
- Legislation, ethics and liability in driving.
- Fitness to drive screening.
- Introduction to adaptive driving.
- Introduction to driving rehabilitation.
- Driving cessation and community mobility.
After completing the course, attendees will have the knowledge and skills to confidently screen clients and create intervention plans for community integration. Attendees are cautioned to integrate the information within their scope of practice. If attendees wish to expand their involvement in this field, they can enrol in the level 2 training course to receive further training in comprehensive driver fitness evaluation and specialist rehabilitation.
How the course fits into the DFC training framework
The DFC has created a Driving and Community Mobility Training Framework that is designed to guide Occupational Therapists through a structured training process and inform their scope of practice based on their level of training and experience.
The framework consists of four levels, starting with this level 1 “Introduction to Occupational Therapy driving intervention” course, which aims to provide the Occupational Therapist with a solid foundation. As Occupational Therapists progress through the levels, they gain more in-depth and specialist knowledge, ending with level 4 as the expert therapist and trainer.
